Hell No I Won't Mow

Our currently house is on a corner.  Normally this would mean lots of hell strips, but since only one of the streets has sidewalks we really only have two.  One is relatively "normal" but the other was very very sunny and very very narrow.  Less than two swipes of a lawnmower wide (isn't that how everyone measures their yard?).  So logically the grass came out and an Agave/Rain Lilly Garden was put in it's place.

Here it is the first year it was in.  Everything has a place and is very under control.  That is no longer the case.  You can see below that it has "filled in" and is due for some division and re-positioning.  It was planned for the spring, but here it is July and it hasn't happened yet.  Maybe in the fall.

The plants in this garden are a real treat.  Definitely different than the other gardens we've installed at this house.

The leaves get caught in everything.  They are a big pain (literally) to pull out, so it don't happen as often as it should.

When it rains, we get to enjoy the beautiful Rain Lillies.  Another interesting group of plants.  The Plant Geek thinks putting them together is humorous.  I'm not sure the neighbors get it, but they seem to enjoy the flowers regardless.

So much better than a boring narrow strip of lawn, don't you think?

  1. I adore your hell stirp plant choices and laughed at the joke of the combination of rain lilies with the xeric plants. On removing the leaves - I use a shop vac as it can get down in there and suck the leaves out without the pain of getting stabbed.

    1. Thanks. They do seem to love the heat and the gravely soil.

  4. Wow that looks really good. Having recently re-potted a cactus for my daughter I don't envy you having to pick those leaves out.
