A Rainy Saturday Morning

The weather took an exciting turn here in DFW this week.  It rained...a lot.  It was wonderful.  When my daughter woke me up Saturday morning (at and ungodly hour), I was so excited to hear the sound of rain. After a few very dry months everyone was more than ready for a little relief.  We can't remember the last time we had significant rainfall at the house.

Saturday morning a few members of the household decided to head outside into the light sprinkles between heavy showers.  It took some convincing that both going outside in our pajamas, and going out in the rain was okay.  Once those hurtles had been crossed we did a quick turtle/tortoise check to see how everyone was doing int he rain.  They were all good.  Then it was time for some serious splashing and made foot prints on the dry concrete up near the house.

Then we decided that even though it had poured rain all morning and was supposed to rain for the majority of the day, that we should probably water some of the flowers.  (We also picked out our own pajamas...Mama isn't taking credit for this fashionable combination.  I'm sure glow in the dark skeleton shirts paired with two sizes too small frog pants will be in everyone's fall collection.)

After we got over the disappointment of being told no to the watering thing, we made a great discovery!

We found a dead snake.  It's only a little baby thing.  Not sure what their real name is, but we called them brown garden snakes.  Here it is on a paper plate.

Then we found a few more treasures.

We found a few of these fabulous cicada exoskeletons.  They make great brooches.

We found three and brought them inside to dry on a paper towel to be added to the collection of "caterpillars" we are keeping in a peanut butter jar.

Once we got our exoskeletons safely drying on the stove where the cat couldn't get them, we headed back outside to make more footprints.  While getting our feet wet we found yet another treasure.

The dead cicada stayed outside.  Shortly after this fabulous find the heavier rain started back up, so we had to head back inside to get ready for the rest of the day.

Hope you had a great weekend, we had a wet one!

  1. Yay, for the rain - and adventures! It looks to me that you have a budding naturalist in your household.

  2. I would be thrilled with a wet weekend. Glad you got a good soaking.
I used to put glue and glass beads in those cicada exoskeletons. They are really pretty then.

    1. I'm sure they look beautiful with glass beads in them, much better than in a Jiff jar.

  3. Wonderful rainy morning, Rebecca. I suppose your little one was glad to explore the garden and find the treasures. Now we have rain every second day and I'm glad too because the water barrels are full.
    Happy week!

  4. What a fun adventure in the garden! I'm glad you got some rain over the weekend; we did too. Your daughter is adorable and I love her bold fashion statement. Do you suppose they make those in adult sizes?
