Through the Lens of a Toddler...Literally

Our daughter has started to insist that we "take turns" with my camera/phone when we are out in the garden.  She leads me around the garden stopping occasionally and saying "wait, I need to take a picture of this"...not sure where she heard this one before.  Every once and a while, it's my turn and I'm allowed to quickly snap a few pictures.  Often they need to include her.

She is not exactly skilled at using the camera on my phone yet.  Out of every 100 pictures she tries to take, she managed to hit the button on the screen less than 50 of them, and only once in a bluemoon does she actually gets a picture of what she wanted that isn't blurry.  She does best with large sweeping plantings where it doesn't matter too much where you actually point the camera.

What a lovely penta planting.

Most of the time, they come out like this.  Sort of showing an object and a little blurry because she never seems to stop moving around.

We were aiming for the pink hibiscus and almost nailed it.

About a fourth of the time lately they include her hands.  She has a really hard time managing her hands and fingers while holding the phone

Look at all those white begonias, with a little bit of toddler palm.

What a lovely stone wall and index finger.

Up until this weekend, all the pictures were random garden shots mixed in with a little bit of the ground, but now she's started directing me to stand in front of things so she can take my picture.  She's a bossy one.  I am shown where to stand, I am supposed to pose as long as she needs me to and I am not allowed to ham it up for the camera.  So far not one of these pictures has shown more than my legs and feet.

The kid needs her own camera.  Preferably one that can't make phone calls and won't get damaged when she eventually drops it (probably in the pool or a puddle).

  1. If you find a good kid camera, let me know! I've been wanting to get one for Forest and maybe I'll have to dig out my old phone in the mean time for him to learn!

    1. It definitely keeps her engaged as I wander around checking on things.

  2. This post is so cute! She definitely needs her own camera. Will a toy camera do the trick, or is she too smart for that? Does she need to actually see the pictures it took? Legs and feet -- that's a toddler's world.

    1. She knows the difference, though a fake one did work for a while this spring.

  3. Maybe you'll be retelling these stories years from now when she's a famous photojournalist! P.S. Even I've had problems keeping my fingers out of the photos I take with my phone.

  4. I get some really odd phone photos too. Enjoy the fun. I bet she gets good at it before you know it.

  5. It could be that from the point of view of toddlers we adults are mostly legs and feet.
