Air Plant Art

If you spend any time on Instagram or Pinterest you have probably noticed that Tillandsias are pretty trendy right now.  While we are not particularly trendy, our new bathroom art in our newly renovated bathroom is.

Interestingly, this project lined up perfectly with our area's first frost of the season.  The change in weather facilitated all of the Tillandsias coming back inside.  If you can remember, we had some mounted to a piece of wood and more in a fancy chair arrangement.  The wood has started to split and won't be able to be used the same way next year and the chair arrangement will be re-done next spring using who know what.  So all of the plants in both of these arrangements were currently sitting loose in the kitchen window or a greenhouse bench.

As we planned to bathroom remodel, we planned on bringing some plants into the space.  It gets great light.  The original plan was one really big stag-horn fern mounted to something and hung on the wall.  Eventually we settled upon a Tillandsia arrangement that could be changed up throughout time.  Don't worry though, these aren't the only plants, and I did get my stag-horn ferns too.

A quick shopping trip to look at framing options led to the purchase of two fake pallets that had small clips to hang pictures, postcards, or other small paper items.  We used some command stripes to hang them up and then got to work mounting the plants.

The majority of the plants are just held on with a loop of wire around them and a twist to create a hanging loop.  Not exactly elegant, but it works and in most cases can't be seen very much.

A few were able to just be clipped directly the the frame using the manufacturer supplied clips.

We love how it turned out.  Hopefully the Tillandsias will do alright in the space and we can add to the collection over time.
